LabManagement diagram 300x167 Lab Management 2.6This month CollabNet has released Lab Management 2.6, the latest version of its popular application for build & test server provisioning. This is a big step, especially in the context of initiatives such as Continuous Delivery, Continuous Deployment and DevOps.

With added support to Amazon EC2 and Apache Libcloud, Lab Management provides a good fit as a hybrid cloud environment, managing both local private and public cloud infrastructures. Upon installation, the first visible change of that new application is the new attractive look, and increased usability. Lab Management’s new UI is built on Twitter’s Bootstrap framework, optimized for web 3.0. And there’s more:

When deployed with TeamForge, Lab Management 2.6 provides:

• New administration approval workflows, for cloud-based host allocation. This helps driving governance and control.

• Improved User Interface (UI) with easier navigation and newer usability enhancements. This reduces the number of clicks and steps needed to achieve routines or frequent actions.

• The new ‘Snapshot Manager’ provides an extremely rapid backup technique. Visible in the Snapshots Tree View, you can create or delete snapshots, view details and switch a machine to a different snapshot.

From a technical perspective, Lab Management 2.6 improves performance due to multiple architectural enhancements, such as a move to Postgres as back-end database and WSGI based engine for performance improvement. Furthermore, with the support for RESTified API’s, Lab Management becomes a programmable IaaC (infrastructure as a Code), that you can embed into your application life cycle workflows.

With Lab Management 2.6, developers and build & test teams can tap into multiple public (like Amazon EC2) and private clouds. Furthermore, they even can provision “bare iron” machines from the same portal interface. This drives convenience and productivity, while at the same time optimizing machine & cloud utilization.
